How to Install a Veranda on a Sloped Patio

If you have a sloped patio and you're thinking about a veranda, you may have been told by one company that it's straightforward and by another that it's complicated. The truth sits somewhere in between. A sloped patio is not a reason to avoid a veranda installation — but it does require a specific approach to the groundwork and threshold that separates a well-executed job from one that will cause problems within a year or two.

Why Sloped Ground Is a Genuine Challenge
A veranda's bottom track — the aluminium threshold that runs along the front edge of the structure and carries the sliding door system — needs to be level and continuously supported along its entire length. The sliding door rollers that run along this track are precision components. If the track is not level, the doors won't operate correctly. If the track flexes because it's spanning a void beneath it, the door alignment drifts over time and the whole system becomes unreliable.
When the ground beneath the track slopes — even a modest gradient of a few centimetres across a typical installation width — there is a height differential that has to be compensated for. The question is how that compensation is achieved.
The Wrong Way: Packers and uPVC Trim
The approach we see most often from less careful installers is to use plastic packers under the post bases and sections of uPVC trim along the front profile to bridge the gap between the bottom of the track and the patio surface. It looks acceptable from a distance on installation day. The problem is that packers are point supports, not continuous support. The threshold track spans between them rather than sitting on a solid base. Over time, that track flexes with foot traffic and thermal expansion, the packer positions shift slightly, and the whole threshold loses its precision alignment.
An experienced installer we work with describes this approach simply and accurately: terrible. It might get a job through to sign-off, but it doesn't serve the customer.
The Right Way: Threshold Timber
The correct solution for a sloped patio is to create a level, solid, continuous substrate under the full length of the threshold track before the track is installed on top of it. The material we use for this is threshold timber — a dense, stable sheet product available in large format sheets (typically around 8 by 3 feet) that can be cut accurately to the profile needed to compensate for the slope.
The process works like this. The slope across the installation is measured accurately. The threshold timber is cut to a tapered profile that exactly matches the gradient — thicker at one end, thinner at the other — so that when it sits on the sloped patio surface, its top face is perfectly level. The aluminium threshold track then sits on top of this level substrate, with solid, continuous bearing across its entire length rather than point support from a handful of packers.
Once the track is in position, uPVC trim is applied to the front and rear edges of the timber substrate, giving a clean, finished appearance that conceals the levelling material and protects it from the weather. The result looks exactly as a correctly installed threshold should look — and more importantly, it performs correctly for the lifetime of the structure.
Why the Material Choice Matters
Threshold timber is used specifically because it is stable — it doesn't compress significantly under load, it doesn't swell and shrink excessively with moisture, and it can be cut cleanly and accurately to the required profile. Using inadequate materials as a substrate — whether that's offcuts of whatever happens to be on the van, foam packing, or repurposed uPVC extrusions — risks compression and movement over time that undermines the level you've worked to establish.
Handling Different Degrees of Slope
Not all sloped patios present the same challenge. A gentle fall of 20 or 30 millimetres across a four-metre installation width is relatively straightforward to compensate for with threshold timber. A steeper gradient — or a patio that slopes in two directions — requires more careful assessment and sometimes a different structural approach.
In cases where the level difference is very significant, the correct solution may be to address the ground level itself before the veranda is installed. This might mean forming a level concrete pad at the post positions, or working with the customer to consider a raised decking platform that creates a level base for the entire installation. These approaches involve more work and cost, but they produce a result that is genuinely stable and long-lasting rather than a compensating detail that is doing too much work.
What to Ask Before You Book
If your patio slopes and you're getting quotes from veranda companies, ask each one directly: how do you handle the threshold on a sloped surface, and what material do you use as a substrate under the track? The answer tells you a great deal about the quality of thinking behind the installation.
An installer who describes a specific, considered approach — threshold timber, accurate profiling, continuous support — is an installer who has done this properly before. An installer who tells you they'll use packers and sort it out on the day is telling you, probably without realising it, that the detail will be improvised rather than planned.
