Frequently Asked Questions

As a rule, add at least 1 metre to your table diameter for adequate shade coverage. A 6-person dining table typically needs a 3–3.5m parasol. For a large seating area or sofa set, a cantilever parasol gives more flexibility as it overhangs without a central pole in the way.

A centre pole parasol sits through the middle of a table — simple, stable, and affordable. A cantilever parasol hangs from an offset arm, giving you unobstructed shade over any seating arrangement. Cantilevers cost more but are significantly more practical for outdoor sofas, sun loungers, and irregular layouts.

The base is everything. Most parasols are sold separately from their base — always match the base weight to the parasol size. A 3.5m cantilever needs a minimum 60–80kg base. In exposed gardens, close and store the parasol whenever wind picks up, regardless of base weight.

Most quality parasol canopies are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof — they'll handle light rain and drizzle but aren't designed to be left up in a downpour. Look for canopies with a high UPF rating and water-repellent coating for the best all-round UK weather performance.

It can, though it's rarely necessary. A covered pergola or veranda already provides shade and rain protection. Where a parasol under cover makes sense is for additional sun angle coverage — early morning or late afternoon sun that comes in low under the structure rather than from directly above.
