Veranda Electrics: What to Plan Before Installation

Electrical planning is one of those aspects of a veranda installation where a small amount of forethought at the right moment saves a significant amount of time, disruption, and cost later on. The right moment is before the veranda goes up — ideally before it's even ordered. The difficult moment is after the structure is installed, the posts are in, the roof is on, and you realise that getting a cable to the place you need it now involves lifting paving, drilling through finished aluminium profiles, or making do with a surface-mounted trunking route that spoils the appearance of the whole thing.

Do You Actually Want Electrics?
The starting point is an honest assessment of whether you want any electrical provision in your veranda, and if so what. This is worth thinking through carefully rather than defaulting to either "we'll add it later" or "let's wire in everything just in case."
Lighting is the most common requirement. A veranda that's used in the evening needs light, and there are good reasons to plan this properly rather than relying on a plug-in outdoor lamp run off an extension lead from the house. Recessed LED spotlights in the underside of the roof structure, strip lighting along the beams, or wall-mounted lights on the house wall — all of these need cable routes planned in advance and ideally installed before the veranda structure makes access difficult.
Heating is a consideration for anyone who wants to use the space comfortably in cooler months. Electric infrared heaters are the most common choice for veranda use — they heat people and surfaces rather than trying to heat the air in a semi-open space, which makes them effective even where the veranda is not fully enclosed. An infrared heater of adequate output for your space needs a dedicated circuit and appropriate weatherproof installation — it is not something to plug into a standard outdoor socket.
Motorised blinds, awnings, or roof louvres — if your structure includes any motorised elements — also need electrical supply. Each motor is typically a low-power device, but the cabling needs to be in place before the moving components are installed, and the control wiring needs to be routed correctly from the outset.
Power sockets are useful in a veranda used as an outdoor living space — for phone charging, a small speaker, garden tools, or a portable heater as a supplement to fixed heating. Outdoor-rated sockets (IP-rated for weather exposure) can be mounted on the house wall or on veranda posts, again needing planned cable routes.
What Changes After the Structure Is Up
The reason electrical planning before installation is so much better than doing it afterwards comes down to cable routes. Every electrical circuit needs a cable run from its power source — typically the house consumer unit or an outdoor distribution board — to its termination point. That cable needs to travel somewhere, and the options available are much greater before a veranda structure is in place than after.
Before installation, cables can be run under the patio surface in conduit — buried below the paving, protected, invisible, and completely unobtrusive. This requires lifting and re-laying some paving, which is manageable as part of the pre-installation groundwork but is a disruptive separate operation later.
Before installation, wall penetrations can be made at exactly the right position and height for the cable route to serve the final installed position of fittings. After installation, the veranda structure may obstruct access to the wall at the necessary points, and the available positions for clean cable entry may be significantly more limited.
Post-mounted electrical components — lights or sockets on veranda posts — need their cables to be routed inside the post structure. This is done during installation; it is not something that can be retrofitted cleanly without significant work.
The Electrical Installation Itself
Electrical work associated with a veranda installation is not something that should be improvised or treated as a DIY project, particularly where circuits are being added to the consumer unit or where heating circuits with meaningful current draw are involved. In the UK, electrical work in garden areas — defined as a special location under Part P of the Building Regulations — requires either a registered electrician (someone who is Part P self-certified) or a building regulations application for the work.
This is straightforward to arrange and not expensive, but it needs to be factored into the project timeline. The electrician needs to complete their first fix — the cable installation and routing — before the veranda structure goes up, and their second fix — connection of fittings and testing — after the structure is complete. If the electrician is not booked and scheduled around the veranda installation, there will be a gap in the programme where the project is on hold waiting for the electrical work to be done.

What a Simple Lighting Setup Requires
For context, a typical simple veranda lighting installation — four to six recessed LED downlights in the roof structure, connected to a single switched circuit — requires approximately the following: a cable run from the house consumer unit or outdoor socket location to the veranda structure (under paving if possible); cable routing up inside a post and along the beam to the light positions; weatherproof connections at each light position; and a suitable switch position, either in the house or in a weatherproof outdoor enclosure at the veranda.
The electrical cost for this kind of installation is modest — typically a few hundred pounds for a registered electrician including materials — and it transforms the usability of the space in the evening. It is significantly more expensive and more disruptive to add afterwards than to include from the outset.
Having the Conversation Early
Our strong recommendation is to decide on your electrical requirements before you finalise the veranda specification, and to have a conversation with an electrician — or ask us to facilitate that conversation — before the installation date is confirmed. The cost of changing your mind about electrical provision before installation is essentially zero. The cost of changing your mind about it after the paving is relaid and the structure is up is real and unavoidable.
