Veranda Footings and Groundwork: How It Should Be Done

There are parts of a veranda installation that get photographed and shared on social media — the gleaming aluminium, the clean glass lines, the finished space full of furniture and plants. And then there are the parts that nobody photographs, that happen in the first few hours of installation day, and that determine whether the whole structure performs correctly for twenty years or starts causing problems within twelve months. The groundwork and footings are in the second category, and they matter enormously.

At Roma Verandas, we've seen the aftermath of shoddy groundwork on enough occasions to know that it's one of the most common ways that a veranda installation fails — not spectacularly, not immediately, but gradually, in ways that become increasingly expensive to address over time. This guide explains what proper groundwork looks like, what the warning signs of a poor approach are, and what questions you should be asking before any installation begins.

Why Footings Matter for a Veranda

A veranda structure isn't just sitting on the ground — it's transferring loads into the ground. The dead weight of the roof, the live loads of snow accumulation, the lateral forces of wind, and in some configurations the uplift forces that wind creates on a large roof area all pass through the posts and into whatever the posts are sitting on. If what the posts are sitting on cannot adequately distribute those forces into the ground beneath, things start to move.

Movement is the enemy of any structure, but it's particularly damaging to one made of aluminium and glass. Glass panels that are designed to sit in a frame that is true and square become stressed when that frame moves even slightly. Sealant joints that were correct when installed begin to open as the structure shifts. Sliding doors that opened smoothly develop friction and misalignment. Drainage details that were designed to channel water in a specific direction no longer work correctly. And over time, what began as minor movement compounds — the structure that was slightly out of square after two years is more significantly out of square after five, and eventually something fails.

What Proper Footings Look Like

The correct approach to veranda footings depends on the specific structure, the ground conditions, and the loads involved. A structural engineer's assessment is the most rigorous way to determine exactly what's needed, and for larger or more complex structures it's what we recommend. But in general terms, the standard approaches to proper veranda footings look like this.

For post-to-ground connections, dedicated concrete padstones or poured concrete foundations are the correct method. A padstone is a pre-cast concrete block, typically around 450mm square and 150mm deep, set into the ground with the top surface level and at the correct height for the post. For a poured foundation, a hole is excavated to the correct depth, concrete is poured, and the post anchor or base plate is set into the wet concrete and allowed to cure before the structure is erected on top.

The depth of the foundation matters and depends on ground conditions. In most domestic garden situations with reasonably stable ground, a depth of 450 to 600mm is typical. In areas with clay soil — which shrinks and swells seasonally with moisture — deeper foundations or specialist design may be required to prevent the seasonal ground movement from being transmitted into the structure.

Where a veranda is being installed on an existing paved surface, the correct approach is to cut out sections of paving at the post positions, excavate to the correct depth, and pour or set foundations that bypass the paving entirely. The structure sits on its foundations, not on the paving slabs.

What Shoddy Groundwork Looks Like

The shortcut that we see taken most often — and the one that causes the most problems — is bolting post base plates directly to existing patio slabs. It's quick, it's cheap, and it looks adequate on the day. The problem is that domestic patio slabs are not designed to carry the concentrated point loads that a veranda post transfers into them, particularly the uplift and lateral forces under wind. Over time, the slabs crack. The haunching mortar under them breaks down. The slabs begin to rock or tip. The post moves with them.

We have seen verandas installed on slabs that were perfectly level on installation day and visibly tilting within eighteen months. The resulting repairs — removing the structure, breaking out the slabs, installing proper foundations, and re-erecting — cost more than the original installation.

Another common shortcut is using inadequate concrete volume or mix. Foundations poured too shallow, or with a mix that has too much water or not enough cement, simply don't achieve the strength needed. They look like proper foundations from the surface, but they degrade over time and fail to hold the post anchor securely.

The Sloped Ground Problem

A challenge that many residential veranda installations face is that gardens are rarely flat. A sloping patio, a garden that falls away from the house, or a site with significant level changes across the installation footprint — all of these require careful thought about how the posts are footed and how the threshold is handled.

This is an area where we see particularly creative improvisation from less experienced installers. Packing the base plate with whatever comes to hand, using uPVC trim sections as levelling components, relying on shims that aren't designed for structural use — these approaches get the structure looking level on day one but provide no long-term stability. The correct solution for sloped ground involves either adjustable post bases designed specifically for the purpose, accurately cut and properly supported substrate under the threshold track, or in more extreme cases, forming a level platform first before the veranda installation begins.

For glass room and sliding door installations on sloped surfaces, the threshold track requires particularly solid and continuous support across its full length. We use proper substrate material — cut accurately to the required profile and bearing fully on a solid base — with trim applied to both edges. The result is a track that is genuinely supported, not one that spans a void and flexes underfoot.

How to Assess Groundwork Quality on an Existing Installation

If you already have a veranda and you're wondering whether the groundwork was done correctly, there are some things you can check without specialist knowledge. Stand on the floor inside the veranda and push lightly against the posts — there should be absolutely no movement. Check the post bases: they should be sitting on solid concrete, not on paving slabs, and there should be no visible cracking in the concrete or paving immediately around the base. Check the door alignment: sliding doors or hinged doors that have become harder to open or close since installation may indicate that the frame has moved.

If you have any concerns, it's worth getting a professional assessment sooner rather than later. Small amounts of movement caught early can often be stabilised without major intervention. Significant movement left unaddressed tends to compound.

Asking the Right Questions Before You Buy

Before committing to any veranda installation, we'd encourage you to ask the installer specifically: how will the posts be footed, what foundation method will you use, and how do you handle the threshold on my sloped patio? Any experienced, competent installer will be able to answer these questions in detail and explain their approach clearly.

If the answer is vague — "don't worry, we'll sort it on the day" or "we'll use some packers to level it up" — treat that as a significant red flag. The groundwork decisions should be made before installation day, based on a proper assessment of your site, not improvised on the spot.
