It needs a sound, load-bearing wall running the full width of the gazebo. Solid brick, blockwork and rendered block are all straightforward. Timber cladding, single-skin garden walls and older lime-mortared brickwork should be checked before you order. Depth options from 2m to 4.5m let you set the front posts wherever the ground in front of the wall is solid.

At 2m deep there is room for a small table and two chairs against the wall. At 3m deep a six-seat table fits with space to pull the chairs out and walk behind them. At 4m and 4.5m you can put a dining table and a seating group under the same roof. Widths run from 2.9m to 7.22m, so the length of the space is set by how much wall you have to give it.

Clear, by some distance. It is the right choice when the gazebo covers a window and you do not want the room behind it going dark. Opal sits in the middle and spreads the light evenly without the glare, which is easier on the eye over a table. Bronze is the darkest of the three and keeps the space coolest through the middle of the summer. All three come in the same kit.

An open-sided structure of this kind is normally permitted development, which is why many people choose one instead of a conservatory or a garden room. Conservation areas, listed buildings and new-build covenants all change the answer, so it is worth ten minutes with your local planning office before you order rather than after the timber has been cut.
