Almost every veranda enquiry begins from the same unspoken assumption: that the structure will be bolted to the back of the house. It is a reasonable place to start, because that is how most verandas are built and it is usually the right answer. But in that arrangement the wall is doing real structural work — carrying roughly half the weight of the roof and resisting the wind trying to lift it — and there are more British houses than people expect where the wall is not the right thing to lean on.

This guide explains what genuinely differs between the two, the situations that make freestanding the sensible choice rather than a fallback, and how they compare on cost and appearance once standing.
How a Wall-Mounted Veranda Carries Its Load
A wall-mounted veranda is a lean-to. The high side of the roof is supported by a wall profile — a length of aluminium fixed to the house through a series of brackets — and the low side sits on a front beam carried by two posts. The roof beams span between the two, typically at a pitch of five to fourteen degrees depending on the system and the height available. The structure is, in effect, a table with two legs, borrowing the house for the other two.
That borrowing is what makes wall-mounting attractive. Two posts rather than four means less obstruction on the patio, less groundwork, fewer components and a lower price. It also means the veranda reads as part of the house rather than an object in the garden, which is the look most people picture when they imagine a covered patio.
What it asks of the wall is not trivial, though. The brackets deliver load into the brickwork at discrete points rather than spreading it, and they resist uplift as well as downforce. A veranda roof is a large, shallow surface, and in a strong wind the pressure difference across it produces suction: the roof is pulled away from the building at the same moment the posts are pushed sideways. The fixings are holding the structure onto the house, not merely holding a weight up. That is why the substrate governs everything, and why the bracket is chosen after the wall has been inspected rather than before.
What Changes When the Structure Stands on Its Own
A freestanding veranda replaces the wall fixing with a back frame: a beam of its own, carried on two additional posts. Everything the wall was quietly contributing now comes from the structure itself, including lateral stability. A wall-mounted veranda is braced against sideways movement by the building; a freestanding one resists it through its own connections, which is why these structures carry more bracing at the post-to-beam junctions.
The foundations change too, and this is the part most often underestimated. With four posts sharing the roof and no wall absorbing any uplift, every post base works in three directions at once — downward under snow and self-weight, upward under wind suction, and sideways under overturning. A base plate bolted to an existing paving slab is not a foundation for that. These structures want proper concrete pads, commonly in the region of 400 to 600 millimetres cube for a domestic veranda, or driven ground screws sized for the same loads.
Water is the third difference. On a wall-mounted veranda the high side is sealed to the house and rain runs forward into the front gutter. On a freestanding one the back is open, so the system either carries a gutter along the back beam or lets the high edge discharge freely. Where such a structure sits close to a house wall, the gap between the two — usually around a hundred millimetres, enough to stop debris packing in — will drip in heavy rain. Better to know that in advance than to discover it in November.
When the Wall Makes the Decision for You
Some houses simply cannot take the fixing. External wall insulation is the most common reason we see: a hundred millimetres or more of insulation board and thin render sits between the bracket and anything structural, and the load must be taken right through it into the original wall on long fixings and thermal-break spacers, without crushing the insulation or breaching the render. It can be done, but it is a specialist detail. Single-skin garage walls, extensions of unknown construction, and timber-frame walls whose brick outer leaf is really a cladding all raise the same question: is there anything behind this that can be relied upon?
Condition matters as much as construction. Spalled brickwork, perished pointing, hollow-sounding render or historic movement cracking may all be sound enough to stand up without being sound enough to be pulled on. Listed buildings and conservation areas raise a different objection again, to putting dozens of holes through a historic facade at all. And some customers simply do not want anything bolted through a wall they have recently had repointed or rendered, which is a preference rather than a constraint but no less valid for that. Sometimes the obstacle is geometric rather than structural — a conservatory roof, a low soffit or a run of pipework occupying exactly the band of wall the brackets need. In none of these cases is freestanding a compromise. It is the design that fits.
Boundaries, Neighbours and Verandas Away From the House
Where a veranda sits against a party wall or close to a boundary, standing free removes a whole category of complication. Fixing into a shared wall brings the Party Wall etc. Act into play in England and Wales, and even where the wall is entirely yours, a structure standing on its own posts inside the boundary is a simpler conversation with a neighbour. Height is worth checking too: structures close to a boundary are generally more restricted under permitted development, and your local authority is the place to confirm what applies to your plot.
The more positive case has nothing to do with problems. A good number of the freestanding structures we supply are nowhere near the house — over a hot tub at the end of the garden, across an outdoor kitchen, or sheltering a seating area sited to catch the evening sun. A wall-mounted veranda can only go where the wall is. A freestanding one goes where the garden is actually used, which is not always the same place, and systems designed from the outset to stand alone — the Ribolla freestanding pergola among them — need no wall fixing anywhere in the design.
Cost, Appearance and the Things People Notice Later
Freestanding costs more, and it is worth being plain about why rather than treating it as a surcharge. You are paying for two additional posts, another structural beam, extra bracing, two more foundations with their groundwork, and often a second gutter run. Set against that, you save the wall fixing work and any remedial masonry a marginal wall would have needed, which occasionally narrows the gap more than people expect.
Visually the two are genuinely different, and preferences vary more than you might think. A wall-mounted veranda disappears into the elevation of the house. A freestanding one reads as a structure — four uprights, a defined footprint, closer to a pavilion than an awning. Some customers dislike extra posts landing in the middle of a patio, particularly on narrower plots where a rear post ends up close to a path or a border. Others prefer the symmetry, and find four matching posts in anthracite look more deliberate than two. It is worth marking where the back posts would land before deciding.
Deciding Which One You Actually Need
In most cases the wall answers the question for us. If the substrate is sound, the brackets have a clear run of masonry at the right height, and the covered area belongs against the back of the house, wall-mounting is cheaper, tidier and entirely appropriate. The freestanding conversation starts when one of those three things is not true, and it is far better to establish that at survey than on installation day, when the frame has already been cut to length.
