Built to Spec or Built to Fit: Why Some Verandas Go Together in a Day and Others Fight You for a Week

There is a moment about an hour into a veranda installation where you find out what you have bought. Not when the delivery arrives, and not when the posts go up. It is the moment the first two components have to fit together properly, and either they do or you start reaching for something to persuade them.

Fitters know this feeling and rarely talk about it publicly, because saying a product is awkward is close to saying you are not good at your job. But there is a real, consistent difference between systems that go together in a day and systems that fight you for a week, and it is not luck and it is not the weather. It is whether the thing was built to a specification or built to be made to fit.

What a Well-Toleranced System Feels Like

It feels like nothing. That is genuinely the point.

Profiles land where the drawing says they land. Screw ports line up with the holes made for them. Glazing bars sit in their channels with a firm push rather than a shove. Cover profiles clip on along their full length instead of at one end and then progressively less. Panels drop into their pockets under their own weight. Nothing has to be forced, nothing has to be packed, and the person doing it stops thinking about the components at all and starts thinking about the level, the setting out and the sequence — which is where their attention should have been the whole time.

You can hear it, too. A well-made assembly is quiet. There is no rubber mallet, no gentle persuasion, no pausing to work out whether that noise was a click or a crack.

What the Other Kind Feels Like

The awkward system does not fail. It just costs you time, over and over, in increments too small to complain about individually.

Every joint needs checking rather than trusting. Cover profiles need springing into place. One bay takes packing shims to get the gasket compressing properly. A bar has to be eased with a file to sit down in its channel. An end cap does not quite meet the profile so you tidy it with sealant and hope. And each of those decisions is a judgement call made by whoever is on site that day, which means the finished quality of your veranda now depends on the patience of one person on a Thursday afternoon rather than on the design.

That is the real cost, and it is not the labour. It is that a loosely made system transfers responsibility for the outcome from the factory to the installer, and then to you.

Why This Matters More If You Are Building It Yourself

An experienced fitter can absorb an awkward system. They have seen a hundred of them, they know which components tolerate persuasion and which do not, and they can tell the difference between a part that is stiff and a part that is wrong. That knowledge is invisible and it is most of what you pay for.

Building it yourself, you do not have that. Which means the tolerance of the system you chose matters far more to you than it does to a professional. A tight, predictable kit is a kit you can build from the manual, because the manual describes what actually happens. A loose one is a kit where the manual describes an ideal, and the gap between the ideal and the parts in front of you has to be closed by experience you do not have yet.

This is a large part of why we are comfortable selling supply-only. It is not because installing a veranda is trivial. It is because the systems we supply do what the documentation says they will, and the assembly manuals and fitting videos are therefore worth the paper rather than being an optimistic account of a process that goes differently in practice.

There is a second-order effect worth naming, because it explains why the difference compounds. On a system that fits, an installer who finds something stiff assumes they have made a mistake and stops to check. On a system that never quite fits, they assume it is normal and carry on. That is how a genuine error — a panel in the wrong bay, a bracket the wrong way up — gets pushed home on an awkward kit and caught immediately on a good one. Predictability is not just pleasant, it is diagnostic.

The Parts of the Build That Are Genuinely Hard

None of this makes an installation easy, and it would be dishonest to suggest that a tight tolerance removes the difficulty. It relocates it.

The hard parts of a veranda build are the ones the manufacturer cannot control. Getting the foundations in the right place, level with each other, and deep enough — with the concrete tops sitting at least a hundred millimetres below finished ground level so nothing shows. Establishing a true datum on a wall that is not straight. Lifting a fully assembled gutter with two people when it wants three. Working out where the water is actually going to go. Those are the jobs that decide whether the finished structure is good, and they are all site work.

What a well-toleranced kit does is leave you the attention to do them properly, instead of spending it fighting the components. That is the entire practical argument.

The weight of the roof changes the character of the job as well. A glazed system such as the Pigato puts roughly seven times the roof weight overhead that a polycarbonate one does, and that changes what "difficult" means. Nothing about the components is harder, but the margin for improvisation narrows — a panel you cannot quite persuade into position is not a panel you can hold above your head while you think about it. Good tolerances matter most exactly where the consequences of a poor fit are heaviest.

Judging It Before You Buy

You cannot test-fit a veranda before ordering, so you are looking for proxies, and there are a few good ones.

Does a real assembly manual exist, with part numbers, sequences and dimensions, rather than a generic sheet of exploded diagrams? A manufacturer who publishes precise instructions is a manufacturer confident their parts match them. Do fitting videos exist showing the actual product rather than a similar one? Are the components model-specific, or is a single generic bracket doing service across a whole range because it is loose enough to fit anything?

The polycarbonate systems are a useful test of this last point. A Bosco is a simpler structure than a glazed one and could easily be treated as a place to save money on precision, because a lighter roof forgives more. That it is not treated that way — same joining method, same documentation standard, same component-level specificity — tells you the approach is a policy rather than something reserved for the flagship.

And ask directly how long the build takes and what people find difficult. A supplier who says two days and names the awkward bit is telling you the truth. A supplier who says it is straightforward and leaves it there has either never built one or is hoping you will not ask again once the pallet is on your drive.
