79 Guides and Counting: Why We Write So Much About Verandas

We have now published 79 articles on verandas, pergolas, carports and glass rooms. That is a great many words about gutters, and it is fair to ask why a company that sells outdoor structures spends so much time explaining them.

The answer is that this is a purchase most people make once. You have no previous veranda to compare with, the terminology is unfamiliar, and the differences that matter are rarely the ones in the brochure. We would rather you understood what you are buying.

What the Guides Cover

The articles are grouped by theme and written to answer the questions customers ask us, and a few they do not know to ask. They cover planning and design, foundations and groundworks, roofing and drainage, glass specification, side elements and privacy, comfort and lighting, and care once the structure is up. There are separate sections for planning advice and for carports.

None of them is a sales pitch. Several will tell you when a particular product is the wrong choice, and a few will talk you out of spending money you do not need to spend.

Five Worth Starting With

If you read nothing else, read why wind does not care that your garden is sheltered. Almost everyone inland describes their garden as sheltered, and it is one of the least reliable things we are told.

If your structure is going into an alcove, why a veranda never fits tight between two walls explains the gap you need to leave and the reason for it. If it is a wide one, why a post always sits under the coupling will save you from designing a layout that cannot be built.

For comfort, blinds above or below the roof sets out why those two are not the same product at two prices. And before anything is ordered at all, plan the path before you plan the pergola is the cheapest good advice we have.

How to Use Them

Read two or three before you ask anyone for a quote, us included. You will ask better questions and you will recognise a vague answer when you hear one. If a supplier cannot tell you the load figures for your exact size, or what the posts will stand on, you will know that matters.

The guides are also there after you have bought. Whether you have a Bosco veranda, a Pinela pergola or a Skyline glass room, there are articles on cleaning, on adding side elements such as a glass side wall later and on what to check after a hard winter.

What Comes Next

We are not stopping at 79. With awnings and several new ranges added this year there is a good deal more to explain, and the questions you send us are where most of the best articles begin. If there is something you cannot find an answer to, ask us. There is a fair chance it becomes number 80.
