The single most common way people invalidate the wind rating on their veranda is by improving it. They add glass sliding doors down one side, or panels at the ends, or a screen to make it usable in October — and the structure they now have is not the structure the published figure described.
The manuals are explicit about this, in a line most people read past: closing off the side walls can affect the maximum wind load. That is not a warning against enclosing a veranda. It is a statement that the rating belongs to the open configuration, and enclosing one changes the sums.
An Open Structure Lets Wind Through
An open veranda is a roof on legs, and wind mostly goes past it. Air arrives, meets a roof plane and some slender posts, and carries on. There is load — a roof at a shallow pitch generates lift, and the posts and gutter present some area — but the structure is not standing in the way of very much.
Close one side and that stops being true. Air that used to pass through now has to go around, and the panel that stopped it has transferred everything it caught into the frame, down the posts and into the foundations. A three metre by two and a half metre glazed side panel is seven and a half square metres of area that did not exist before, positioned vertically, exactly facing the wind that matters most.
That is the obvious half. The less obvious half is bigger.
The Part Nobody Expects: Internal Pressure
A partly enclosed structure behaves differently from either an open one or a fully closed one, and it is often the worst of the three.
Enclose three sides and leave the front open and you have made a box with one opening. Wind entering that opening cannot easily leave, so it pressurises the inside. That internal pressure pushes outwards on every surface at once — up on the roof, out on the panels — and it adds to whatever the wind is already doing on the outside. The roof is now being lifted from below and sucked from above simultaneously.
Change which side is open and the answer changes completely. Enclose the two ends and leave the front and back clear and air flows through, which is a mild condition. Enclose the back and both ends with a large opening at the front, and you have built something closer to a carport facing the prevailing wind, which is one of the harder cases in wind engineering. Same components, same total area of glazing, dramatically different loads — decided entirely by which side you left open.
This is why "how much glass are you adding" is the wrong question and "which sides, and what stays open" is the right one.
It is worth being clear that none of this is an argument against enclosing a veranda. An enclosed structure is dramatically more useful — it extends the season by months, keeps furniture dry, and turns an outdoor space into something closer to a room. The point is only that it is a different structure from the one in the brochure photograph, and it wants to be specified as such rather than assembled by accretion over three summers.
Not All Infill Behaves the Same
The good news is that side elements are not one thing, and the differences are useful.
Solid glazing is the fullest case. Glass sliding doors and fixed glass side walls stop essentially all the air and transfer all of it into the frame. They also give you the most usable space, which is why people want them, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as the structure is specified for it from the start.
Sliding doors have one characteristic worth knowing: they can be opened. A structure enclosed for winter can be opened up before a storm, which genuinely reduces the load, and that is a real advantage over fixed panels if you are somewhere exposed and pay attention to forecasts.
Slatted and louvred infill sits in between. Grillo panels and louvred side elements break the wind and give privacy while still letting air through, so they add far less load than solid glazing for a similar visual effect. Rotating louvres go further still, because they can be opened flat in bad weather.
Fabric screens and blinds are their own case and the one most often underestimated. A tensioned fabric panel is a sail in the most literal sense, and this is precisely why they are built with wind sensors and retraction limits. Those limits are not a manufacturer being cautious about warranty claims. They are the operating envelope, and a screen left down in a storm is the most likely thing on any veranda to be damaged first.
Height interacts with all of this and is easy to miss. Wind speed increases with height above ground, and a side panel is a vertical surface catching the fastest air the structure sees. Two otherwise identical verandas, one with its gutter at two and a half metres and one at two, do not face the same conditions once they are enclosed — and on freestanding structures using mounting brackets there is already a published cap on gutter height for exactly this reason. Adding sides to a tall structure is a bigger change than adding them to a low one.
Do It at the Design Stage
The practical consequence is straightforward and it is about timing rather than restriction.
If there is any chance you will enclose a side later — and there very often is, because people live with a veranda for a summer and then want to use it in November — say so at the start. The structure can be specified for the enclosed condition from day one: post positions, foundation sizes, fixings and configuration all chosen knowing what is coming. It costs very little at drawing stage and it is expensive to retrofit, because the parts that need upgrading are the foundations and the posts, which are the parts already in the ground.
What you should not do is treat side elements as accessories that can be added to any structure indefinitely. They are not curtains. They are a change to the load path, and the honest way to sell them is to say so.
The Question to Ask
When you are quoted a veranda with side elements, ask one thing: is the wind rating you have given me for the open structure or for this configuration?
If the answer is the open structure, the number does not describe what you are buying. If the supplier does not know which it is, that is worth knowing too. And if the answer is that it has been calculated for the enclosed configuration, you are dealing with somebody who understands what they are selling, which is most of what you were trying to find out anyway.
