Everything about joining systems together sounds theoretical until you put it against a real garden. Most houses are not simple rectangles at the back. There is an extension that projects two metres, a bay window, a side return that gets no use, a boundary that is not parallel to anything, and a patio laid by somebody who was working around a drain cover.
This is a walk through the arrangements that come up most often, what each one is made of, and the detail that decides whether it looks deliberate or improvised.
The Long Run Across a Wide House
The simplest and by far the most common. A rear elevation of eight, nine or ten metres, covered by two or three sections joined end to end with gutter connectors, a post under each coupling, and intermediate posts wherever a bay would otherwise exceed four metres.
The thing that makes it succeed is the beam line. Because every section runs at the same pitch and the gutter is continuous across the connectors, the whole width reads as one structure. Nobody standing in the garden identifies where one section ends and the next begins, and that is the point.
The detail to settle early is which section widths you use, because that determines where the couplings fall and therefore where the posts stand. A nine-metre run can be built as 5060 plus 4060 or as 4060 plus 5060, and the post moves a metre depending on which way round you go.
The L, Round a Corner
A run along the back that turns and continues down the side return. This is the arrangement that most changes how a house is used, because the side return is usually the deadest part of a garden and a covered route through it turns it into something.
It is built as two systems meeting at a shared corner post, with a two-system connection piece carrying both gutter ends. What has to be resolved on paper is height. Each roof has a fixed pitch, so each gutter arrives at a height determined by its own projection and wall profile height. If the two legs have different projections — and they usually do, because a side return is narrower than a rear elevation — they will not meet at the same height unless somebody has worked backwards from the corner.
Get that wrong and you have a step in the beam line at the corner, which is the single most visible mistake available on this kind of layout and is not adjustable afterwards.
Stepping Around an Extension
Where the house steps out partway along, the structure steps with it: a deeper section over the original elevation, a shallower one across the extension, sharing a post at the change.
This is usually the arrangement that covers the most useful ground, and it is almost never what gets quoted first, because a configurator produces one depth. It is worth asking for specifically.
The two sections have different projections, so they have different gutter heights, so the junction needs the same working-backwards that a corner does. The compensation is that a stepped elevation makes the change look intentional rather than awkward, since the building itself has already established the line.
Wall-Mounted Meeting Freestanding
The one that surprises people. A structure fixed to the house can continue out over a patio where there is no wall to fix to, by joining a wall-mounted system to a freestanding one at a shared post line.
From underneath it is one roof. Structurally the first section hangs off a wall profile at its back edge, the second stands on its own rear posts, and the two share a connection. The components are different for each half — connection sets come in wall-mounted and freestanding versions for exactly this reason — and the freestanding half needs its rear posts, its horizontal beam and its own foundations.
It costs more per square metre than the wall-mounted half, because everything the wall was doing has to be replaced with metal and concrete. It is still usually cheaper than the alternative, which is a second structure standing separately and looking like it.
Four Planes at One Point
For larger covered areas, four systems can meet at a single post with a four-system connection. It is how a big footprint gets built from standard sections instead of as a special, and it is why that connection set arrives with four connection pieces and five box sections rather than a couple of brackets.
The centre post here is taking load from four directions at once. It is not a place to be economical about foundations, and it is not a place for improvised fixings.
What Decides Whether It Looks Right
Four disciplines, and they apply to every arrangement above.
Keep the pitch identical across every section, so the roof reads as related planes rather than assorted ones. Resolve beam and gutter heights at every junction before anything is ordered. Keep the post family consistent — same section, same colour, same detail — even where spacings vary. And let the post positions frame the view rather than sit in it, since post positions are one of the few things you have complete control over.
Get those right and a structure made of three sections, turning a corner and stepping over an extension, looks like it was drawn for the house. Get them wrong and the same components look like three things bolted together.
Bringing It to a Supplier
The useful thing to arrive with is not a size. It is a list of fixed points: where the drain covers are, where the ground steps, where the extension projects, which way the boundary runs, and where you actually walk.
Sequencing a Multi-System Build
Joined and cornered structures reward getting the order of works right, because several trades and several deliveries have to line up.
Groundworks come first, with every foundation set at once and to a common level — including the ones under couplings and connection posts, which are the least forgiving positions on the job. Any ducting for lighting or power goes in while the ground is open. Then the structure, with the gutter sections joined on trestles before anything goes up. Then drainage connections, which need to be settled before the posts are fixed since the downpipe position is constrained by where the couplings are. Doing it in that order takes no longer. Doing it in a different order means digging next to something that is already standing.
From those, post positions can be derived, and from post positions the section widths follow. That order round produces a modular structure that fits the site. The other order round produces a rectangle shrunk until it fits between the obstacles, which is what most people are offered and why so many gardens end up with less cover than they could have had. Whether the answer is a wall-mounted run, a freestanding structure, or one of each joined together, it starts from the same list.
