Almost every pergola and veranda arrives with the same underlying assumption: a post in each corner, the roof stopping where the posts stop. It is the obvious arrangement, it is how the products are photographed, and it is what most quotations are built around. It is also not a rule.
Moving the posts inboard, so the roof continues past them and cantilevers out over open ground, changes the character of a structure completely. It is the difference between something that reads as a garden building and something that reads as part of the house — a terrace roof rather than a box with a lid. It costs a little more engineering thought and often no more material, and it is worth understanding before you settle on a layout.
What an Intentional Overhang Actually Is
Instead of the posts sitting at the outer corners of the roof, they are set back — perhaps three or four hundred millimetres, sometimes considerably more — so a section of the beam and the roof structure projects beyond them. The load path changes: the beam is no longer simply spanning between supports, it is spanning between them and then continuing as a cantilever, with the post acting as a fulcrum.
That is a straightforward structural arrangement, but it is one the system has to be designed for. Beam sections, post positions and fixing details all depend on how far the roof is being asked to reach unsupported, and it is not something to improvise on site. The distinction that matters is between an overhang that was designed in and one that was created by moving posts to suit a paving joint.
What It Does Visually
The visual gain is larger than the dimensions suggest, and it comes from three effects.
The first is that the eye reads the roof edge as the boundary of the structure, and the posts as something happening inside it. That makes the whole thing look wider and more generous than the same roof with posts at its corners, which is a useful trick on a modest structure.
The second is shadow. A projecting roof edge throws a defined shadow line onto the ground and onto the face of the building, and that line is what makes architecture look deliberate. A roof stopping flush with its posts produces a much weaker shadow and reads as flat.
The third is that setting the posts back opens up the corners. A corner post is visually heavy and it interrupts the view diagonally, which is the direction people mostly look. Move it in and the corner becomes an opening, and the space feels connected to the garden rather than fenced off from it.
What It Does Practically
The overhang is doing real work as well as looking better. A projecting edge keeps rain off the ground immediately beneath it, which matters at the point where the structure meets a path or a door and where you would otherwise get a splash line. It shades the outer edge of the space from high summer sun without needing a side element, because at midday the sun is coming from above rather than the side.
It also gets the posts out of the traffic. A post at the corner of a terrace is exactly where people walk, where furniture gets pushed, and where a wheelbarrow catches. Setting it back four hundred millimetres removes a recurring irritation nobody thinks to mention when they are choosing a structure.
And on a site where the useful ground is limited — a terrace bounded by a wall, a raised bed, a drop — an overhang lets the roof cover an area the posts could not have stood in. That is often the practical reason for doing it in the first place.
What It Costs You
The honest trade-offs are worth stating. A cantilevered roof edge is less stiff than a supported one, and in high wind it is the part that moves most. That is a design matter rather than a defect, but it does mean the overhang length is constrained by the system, and a supplier who will not tell you what that constraint is has not thought about it.
Setting posts back also reduces the effective footprint the posts enclose, so if you want the same clear area between posts you need a bigger structure overall. Guttering at a projecting edge is further from the post that would normally carry the downpipe, so the drainage detail needs deciding rather than defaulting. And side elements can only be fitted between posts, so any part of the roof that overhangs is by definition a part you cannot glaze, screen or enclose. If you think you may want to close a side in later, the overhang has to be planned around that.
Where It Works Best
Against a house, a set-back post line gives you the terrace roof effect, where the structure reads as an extension of the building's own eaves rather than as a separate object leaning on it. This is the most common and the most effective use of it.
Over a seating area, an overhang on the side people arrive from means you step under cover before you reach the posts, which is a small thing that makes a space feel considerably more welcoming.
Over a level change, a cantilever lets the roof continue past a retaining wall or a step where no post could stand, covering ground that would otherwise have to be left out.
And on a narrow site, moving the posts in from a boundary keeps foundations away from a neighbour's line and away from services, while the roof still covers the full width available.
Raising It at the Right Moment
This has to be settled at design stage, because it determines post positions, and post positions determine foundation positions, beam specification and every side element that might ever be fitted. It is not an adjustment that can be made once the holes are dug.
As a rough guide to what is reasonable, overhangs in the region of three hundred to six hundred millimetres cover most of what people are trying to achieve and sit comfortably within what a typical beam section will do. Beyond that you are into a genuine cantilever calculation, and a supplier should be able to tell you where their system's limit is without hesitating. If they cannot, that is the answer to a different question.
The question worth asking, when a layout is put in front of you, is simply why the posts are where they are. If the answer is that they are at the corners because that is where posts go, it is worth asking what the structure would look like with them moved in. Sometimes the answer is that it would look worse, or cost more than it is worth. Often it is that nobody had suggested it, and it is the single change that makes the difference between a structure that does the job and one you are genuinely pleased with every time you look at it.
