Most of the structures we sell are fixed to a house. But the best spot in many gardens is nowhere near the back wall. It is the corner that catches the evening sun, the paved area by the pond, or the space beside a wood-fired hot tub. For those places you want something that stands on its own four legs.
The Titan is our answer for that, and it has become one of the most asked-about products we offer.
A Roof That Opens and Closes
The Titan is a louvred pergola. Its roof is made of aluminium blades that tilt, so you can open them to the sky, angle them to cut the glare while keeping the breeze, or close them when the rain starts.
What sets it apart is that the louvres are double layered and overlap when closed. A single-layer louvred roof gives shade and a degree of shelter. An overlapping one sheds rain properly. The water runs into channels inside the frame and down through the hollow legs, so there are no downpipes to spoil the outline. The design won a Red Dot award, which is given for product design, and when you see how cleanly it handles water you understand why.
Three Ways to Have It
It comes freestanding on four posts, or wall mounted, which fixes one side to the house and does away with two of the posts. There is also a motorised version, with the louvres driven by remote control and LED lighting built in.
Sizes run from a compact square for a bistro set up to long rectangles for a full dining and seating area. The finishes are anthracite, a lighter pebble tone and a wood-look for gardens where grey metal would feel too stark.
Building It Into a Room
The Titan has its own family of side elements, and this is where it becomes more than a roof. There are glass sliding doors to keep the wind out without losing the view, louvred side walls for privacy from the neighbours, and a pull-down privacy screen for low sun. A smart LED kit and a pergola-mounted heater sees to the evenings.
You do not have to decide all of that on day one. Many people put up the pergola, find out which side the wind comes from, and add a wall or a set of doors on that side the following season.
Who It Suits
The Titan suits someone who wants a real, adjustable roof in a part of the garden away from the house, in a size that fits an ordinary garden without dominating it. It is a straightforward build, typically a day or two, on a level, solid base.
If you need to cover a very wide terrace with no posts in the middle, or you want a structure that joins to the house and takes full glazing, one of our larger louvred systems, such as the Pinela Tilt, will suit you better, and we will say so.
Getting the Base Right
Whichever you choose, a freestanding pergola is only as good as what it stands on. The posts need a solid, level footing, and the legs carry the rainwater down, so think about where that water goes when it reaches the ground. Tell us what the surface is now and we will tell you whether it will do.
