When the terrace is too big for electric

A 230V electric heater has a hard ceiling on what it can deliver, and a wide or exposed terrace reaches it fast. The Platinum Smart-Heat Gas works above that ceiling - 42MJ from the 500 Series across roughly 20m2, or 25MJ from the 300 across 15m2.

The ceramic fascia is what makes that much heat comfortable. Instead of a fierce hot spot under the burner it spreads the output evenly across the area below with a soft red glow, and the patented wind-resistant burner design keeps it working on the exposed frontages where cheaper gas heaters simply give up.

Specify the gas first
Natural gas and LPG versions carry different injectors fitted at the factory - 1.20mm and 0.82mm respectively. Confirm your supply before ordering; the two are not interchangeable on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 300 Series delivers 25MJ over roughly 15m2 and suits a typical domestic covered terrace. The 500 Series delivers 42MJ over roughly 20m2 and is the choice for larger, more exposed or commercial spaces. If the area is open on more than one side, take the 500 - gas output goes further than electric but wind still takes its share.

Not by swapping a setting. The two versions are supplied with different injectors from the factory - 1.20mm for natural gas, 0.82mm for LPG - so you need to order the correct model for your supply. Running a heater on the wrong gas is dangerous and voids the warranty.

No. The Platinum Gas is an on/off appliance and cannot be modulated, which is the main trade-off against electric. An Affinity on/off controller will switch up to ten gas heaters per channel, so you can zone a large terrace, but the output within each zone is full or nothing.

A minimum of 2000mm from the finished floor and at least 1100mm to any combustible material at the top and sides. Bromic recommend a minimum installation height of 2500mm for ceiling mounting. Your Gas Safe engineer will confirm against the site and local requirements before installing.

Per unit of heat delivered, mains natural gas is usually significantly cheaper than electricity in the UK, so a heater that runs for long periods on a hospitality terrace often pays back the extra install cost. LPG bottled gas narrows that gap considerably. Where a terrace is used occasionally, the simpler electric installation usually wins.
