Tungsten Smart-Heat Portable adds months of usable evenings to your outdoor space, from £2,087 with free delivery included.

The freestanding heater worth having outside

Most freestanding patio heaters are a pole with a reflector, and they behave like it - unstable, uncontrollable and hopeless in a breeze. The Tungsten Portable was designed as a piece of furniture that happens to put out 40MJ of radiant heat across roughly 20m2.

The contoured body gives it far better wind resistance than an open mushroom reflector, the angled bracket points the heat at people rather than the sky, and adjustable controls let you run it at around 23.5 MJ/h on a mild evening. Built-in wheels move 56kg without help, and it comes apart for winter storage.

Built-in wheels in the 700mm square base move 56kg through tight spaces, and the modular column comes apart for storage.

Angled bracket at the head directs the heat outwards at seated people rather than straight up into the sky.

Contoured body designed for superior wind resistance compared with a conventional open mushroom reflector.

A standard 9kg or 13.5kg LPG cylinder sits inside the body out of sight, with adjustable controls running the burner anywhere from about 23.5 to 40 MJ/h.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard 9kg or 13.5kg LPG or propane cylinder, which sits inside the body out of sight. You will need the correct UK propane regulator and hose - these are not supplied with the heater. It will not run on natural gas or butane.

At full 40MJ output a 13.5kg cylinder gives roughly 15 to 18 hours of running; turned down towards 23.5 MJ/h it will stretch considerably further. In practice most people get several evenings from a bottle, and keeping a spare is sensible if you use it regularly.

Better than most. The contoured body was designed for wind resistance rather than being an open reflector, and the 700mm square base with a full cylinder inside gives it a low centre of gravity. The anti-tilt switch cuts the gas if it is knocked. In genuinely strong wind, shut it down and store it - that applies to any freestanding heater.

Under an open-sided veranda or canopy, yes, provided there is a minimum of 1000mm between the top of the heater and the roof and free air movement through the space. It must never be used in an enclosed room or a fully sealed garden room, because it is a flued-free combustion appliance.

It puts out considerably more heat than any single 230V electric heater and needs no wiring, which makes it the obvious choice for a garden with no power at the terrace. The trade-offs are cylinder changes, less precise control, and the fact that it must stay outdoors or under an open canopy. If you have power and a covered space, an electric Tungsten or Platinum is tidier.

How do we get you heated?

  1. 1

    Tell us the space

Tell us the size of the area, how it is covered, and whether you have power or gas available. A couple of minutes on the phone or a few photos is usually all we need to get started.

  2. 2

    We spec it properly

We work out the output and the number of heaters your space actually needs, then confirm the mounting method, the controller and any clearances your ceiling height dictates.

  3. 3

    Fitted and tested

Your electrician or Gas Safe engineer installs to the Bromic clearances, we commission the controller with you, and you get a heater that works properly rather than one that merely fits.
